Demolition of 212 W. 3rd
STORM
DAMAGE
The Cherryvale Police
Department is advising
residents to use caution
when hiring contractors to
perform storm damage repairs
to your property.
• Start with contractors you
know. If you have been
satisfied with the previous
work of licensed local
contractors, try them first.
If they can't help you, ask
for recommendations.
• Ask to see city, county &
state licenses.
• Check the contractor's
reputation. Ask the local
Better Business Bureau,
homebuilders association,
state licensing board or
trades council if there have
been any complaints filed
against the contractor you
want to hire.
• Ask for and check
references. Call some of the
contractor's previous
customers and ask if they
would hire the contractor
again.
• Ask for proof of
insurance. If the contractor
does not have liability for
workers' compensation
insurance, you may be liable
for accidents on your
property.
• Ask for a written estimate
and check to make sure it
includes all the work you
expect to have done, as well
as taxes and other fees.
Keep in mind that some
contractors charge for an
estimate. Once you decide to
use a particular contractor,
ask for a written contract,
including all tasks to be
performed as well as
associated costs, a timeline
and payment schedule and who
is responsible for applying
for necessary permits and
licenses. Never sign a blank
contract.
• Ask for any guarantees in
writing. Guarantees should
be written into the contract
and should state what is
guaranteed, who is
responsible and how long the
guarantee is valid.
• Get a copy of the final,
signed contract. Once
signed, the contract is
binding on both you and the
contractor.
• Do not sign off before the
job is finished and you have
inspected the work
performed. Do not sign
completion papers or make
the final payment until the
work is completed to your
satisfaction.
• Pay by check in order to
keep a record and avoid
double charges.
• Never make advance payment
in cash.
• Report suspicious people
in your area to the police
department ASAP.
The City does not endorse
contractors with a City of
Cherryvale Transient
Merchant License. Possession
of a City issued license
only confirms that the
contractor has provided the
City with the required
information to obtain a
license and the City does
not have any knowledge as to
the quality of work
performed by the licensee.
